Our client is seeking a Senior Network Engineer Contractor to assist with the design, implementation and maintenance of our client's network infrastructure and network servers. This position will assist with the configuration and maintenance of existing network components, implement network upgrades, develop network management tools to perform capacity planning and to monitor & report on the reliability of the network, and provide problem resolution for network hardware and services. 
 
Manage the daily operation, problem resolution, and maintenance of elements of their global network such as complex core routing systems, switching systems, firewalls and load-balancers, and associated hardware and software components. Develop operational service objectives and determine maintenance and upgrading strategies and schedules to ensure optimal performance of network and the effective delivery of services. Design, develop, implement, and recommend purchase of network management tools to monitor and report on the reliability and traffic flow of the network; utilize external system tools to operate and configure network.
 
Design and develop major network elements (e.g., large-scale switching systems), including complex network hardware and software systems; collaborate with our client's staff regarding the provisioning of network connectivity through systems using a variety of transmission technologies (e.g., copper and fiber optic cabling, licensed and unlicensed radio systems). Research and identify system enhancements for network projects including reviewing, analyzing, and recommending purchases of hardware and software; Serve as the technical lead on domestic and global projects involving multiple stakeholders. Negotiate with vendors for cost-effective hardware and software acquisitions.
 
Assist staff with the troubleshooting of technical problems, network maintenance, and scheduled repair of complex hardware (e.g. Cisco routers and switches) and software (e.g., Arista, Cisco IOS, ISC DHCP & BIND), computer interfaces to network equipment, and wide-area network connections to and external peering with Regional and Global WAN providers, NRENs, and Commercial ISPs). Serve as technical liaison to customers of HSRN & NYU-NET services to resolve complex technical problems.
 
Develop, plan, and maintain a network capacity program to ensure that the network meets the academic and administrative needs.  Consult with academic and administrative departments to identify technical needs and recommend network upgrades and enhancement of hardware, software, and components to ensure the optimal performance of the network.
 
Keep abreast of technological developments in the field of network communications through participation in technical groups, attending conferences, and researching technical literature to ensure students, faculty, and staff are provided dedicated access to high quality equipment and technical resources. Communicate with vendors and monitor vendor's websites to remain aware of emerging hardware/software products, and download vendor information and upgrades to resolve problems and optimize network capability.
 
Current Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Infinera, Ciena, Arista EOS, Cisco Nexus, Cisco IOS, Infoblox DDI, ISE; Familiarity with Perfsonar, Pulse Cisco Wireless, MS Active Directory, LDAP, Oracle, Apache Global Server Load-Balancing.
 
Current Preferred Experience
Intensive network configuration and troubleshooting experience with MS Windows, Apple Macintosh and Unix/Linux Operating Systems in a large (?10,000 nodes) campus environment. Experience in supporting a multi-site Global WAN using both public and private connectivity. Experience with WDM systems such as Ciena or Infinera. Experience with network management systems such as HP Openview. Previous experience and basic understanding of administering Unix-based systems. Experience participating in projects involving the design and build out of cabling plants for new building or data center facilities.
 
The Senior Network Engineer consults with staff regarding network design and operation, collaborates with them to deliver and integrate ITS network services, and makes recommendations to them on the purchase of network hardware and software; provides technical support and training regarding networked hardware and software to staff, faculty and students; obtains product information, establishes service contracts, requests troubleshooting assistance, and arranges for the repair/return of defective equipment from vendors.
